Below is the Sample Personal Statement for Speciality in Family Medicine
The efficacy of medicine has been known to me since I lost my grandmother, who lived in a village in the East of India, where medical awareness was trivial. I was saddened by this occurrence, and at the same time felt the need to learn and practice medicine so I could save people in my village. However, at that time I could not do anything, but now after I have fought all the odds, like studying medicine where a girl child in my village refrained from studying and managing my finances, I have come a long way. I feel fortunate to be in this position today where I can not only study but also work. My family has been the foothold of many of my accomplishments, which have catalyzed my wish to be in the field of medicine.
Apart from the wonderful support that was proffered by my family, I owe my inclination and diligence towards medicine which is reflected in my grades. Moreover, through various camps where I participated in looking after the patients, I felt a sense of satisfaction. I was delighted when I found a girl child’s mother coming and thanking me for my efforts in curing her. This feeling was inexplicable and has been a constant in encouraging me to treat and cure more patients.
My affinity and commitment to Family Medicine branched from the aforementioned incident which happened at the Nehru Hospital, Telangana. Not only this, I was exposed to patients ranging from young pediatric patients to gynecology, psychiatry, and even the sometimes difficult and irritable geriatric patients. Each time I treated someone and they were free of the ailments, the happiness I secured is yet to match any other event in my life. It was through this, that I realized the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and the faith the patients and their caregivers have in the doctors.
Subsequently, my growing interest and zeal in treating patients with a passion brought me to continue working at my hometown’s hospitals Christ and Sarvodaya hospitals. Here, I held the responsibility of managing the outpatient department and in-patient admission including discharge. Working in this for one year, I was ceaselessly stimulated to earn more such happy events. And simultaneously, decided to travel to the UK to join my husband in the UK.
In the UK I found a gamut of opportunities to widen my interest and knowledge in the field of family medicine. To begin with, I completed my externships with family Medicine physicians, in San Francisco. Along with this patients from my home country often consulted me about the pandemic and the kind of precautions they were to take to prevent the virus. This was done through teleportation, where I thank the confluence of technology with medicine, because of which I could help people.
In 2017, when I came to the UK, I also got exposure to a broad range of medical specialties at various places with a diverse patient population. This close interaction supplemented my development of research skills and manuscript publications. As a result, I was enrolled in various continuing education opportunities such as research methodology, and John Residency Preparation Course.
Nevertheless, my quest to work in real-time with the patients urged me to participate in community service programs as this is where I draw real happiness. These achievements of observing how your treatment works, and how your empathy for the patient and the caregiver works as a morale booster are something I will cherish forever.
I have relentlessly enjoyed the long hours of work I have put in as my takeaway from this has been the extensive amount of knowledge that I possess today. Moreover, the rigorous educational experience has also been fundamental in bringing me to this platform where I intend to stay in the UK and help people of diverse communities and instill inclusivity. This reaching out to the rest of the world has given me credence and fanned my dreams that I will continue to nurture lives and provide the best of treatment by being a part of the family medicine sphere.
This quote here showcases and sums up the principle of my life, ‘Where the art of medicine is loved, there is also love for humanity.
